Best Booking Strategy
International: book Delhi 2–5 months out and fly mid-week. The cheapest months to fly are September and late January–February; December 15–January 5 and the weeks around Diwali see fares spike 40–60%, so if you want Diwali itself (worth it), book 5+ months out.
Domestic flights: IndiGo, Akasa and Air India Express all run sale fares 4–6 weeks out, and prices climb steeply inside 14 days. Book the Varanasi → Goa leg first — it has the fewest daily options and the worst last-minute prices on the route.
Trains: the booking window opens 60 days before departure (it used to be 120 — don't trust older guides), and popular AC classes on tourist routes sell out within hours of opening. Register on IRCTC in advance (the foreign-tourist verification is fiddly — do it a week early) or pay 12Go a few dollars to handle it.
Class matters on Indian trains: 3AC (air-conditioned 6-berth) is the sweet spot for overnight legs at $8–15. Sleeper Class ($3–5) is an experience, but it's also an open carriage in 40°C heat. AC Chair is right for daytime hops like Delhi → Agra.
Consider flying into Delhi and out of Goa or Mumbai (open-jaw). It costs the same as a return, saves the $40–80 Goa → Delhi domestic leg, and — more valuable — saves you a full day of backtracking at the end of the trip when you're most tired.
